Demonstrating the latest range of its VAIO laptops, Sony made a long-term strategy announcement with regard to this product category. Taking into account that 54% of people use a different PC for business and for personal use, Sony decided to clearly differentiate VAIO laptops designed for work and leisure by launching two lines of VAIO products with distinct features and customer benefits. Even the product warranty policy reflects the new approach. The ‘leisure’ FW series which consists of five models has a one year warrantee while the four models in SR, BZ and Z-Series designed for business, come with a two to three year warrantee.
The VAIO FW-Series has been designed for the next generation of HD home entertainment, featuring a 16.4in wide diagonal display screen and an integral Blu-ray disc drive. To facilitate multimedia performance, the FW-Series is powered by the new Intel Centrino 2 platform, optimising everything from multi-tasking and processor speed to battery life. This range uses Dolby Sound Room technology to create the sound quality of a small home theatre on the notebook’s speakers and headphones, says the manufacturers. With the ability to write as well as read Blu-ray Discs, on the top models, the FW series also allows users to edit and store up to 50GB of HD video content on a single disk. This makes the FW series “an ideal family desktop PC replacement,” commented Robi Duncan, UK consumer product manager at Sony.
The SR, BZ and Z-Series are focused on ensuring the security, mobility and excellent performance of business users. For example the SR models weighs less than 2kg (the Z-series weighs less than 1.5kg) have 5 hour battery life and 4GB system memory. All business models feature an integrated 1.3megapixel Motion Eye web camera for video conferencing.
