Pure has launched a set-top box with a difference. Avalon 300R Connect is a high-performance Freeview+ HD digital TV recorder with a unique user interface that offers the latest versions of BBC iPlayer and YouTube, and full integration with Pure’s internet radio and music services.
Avalon users get free access to four HD channels from the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 plus over 50 SD channels. They can also pause and rewind live TV for up to two hours and are prompted whenever there is an HD version of their chosen programme. The ‘Picture in Picture’ feature allows the user to continue watching one programme whilst previewing other channels.
The Avalon recorder is available with either 500GB capacity or 1TB hard drive. The 1TB version allows up to 600 hours of SD, or 250 hours of HD video recording. Two channels can be recorded simultaneously thanks to Avalon’s dual tuners and a whole series can be recorded using the 8-day Electronic Programme Guide.
Video or audio content can be streamed to Avalon via a network storage device or a uPnP capable device and content can also be played back via the USB slots. Designed to be an entertainment hub, Avalon is the only set-top box on the market to come with four HDMI inputs, stresses the manufacturer.
Colin Crawford, Pure’s director of marketing, commented to IER: “Avalon is a very highly specified product. But even more important is user experience – and products those days live or die depending on how good user experience they deliver. And this is where we nailed it. We’ve produced a box which is lovely and very simple to use and one that can be proudly shared with family and friends.”
Avalon’s features will be enhanced in the coming months with the addition of other on-demand services and access to millions of music tracks via the Pure Music subscription service.
