The Richer Sounds store in Exeter has suffered extensive fire damage caused by a blaze which started on Wednesday July 27. Richer Sounds is unable to trade from the store, based on Sidwell Street, until further notice.

It’s suspected that the fire emanated from the basement of the store, although definitive answers will be dependent on further investigations by firefighters and police officers, the company revealed.

Richer SoundsDeputy managing director Jez Avens commented: “We’re extremely thankful that no one was seriously injured. The loss of stock and damage to property is inconvenient and upsetting, but these things are replaceable; people are not. Our focus is now on securing and reinstating the premises – both the shop and the flats above. We’re also putting in contingency plans so that our valued customers experience minimal disruption.”

Director Julie Abraham said, “We cannot praise the emergency services enough. Responses from the fire brigade and police were exemplary and we’re grateful to the 50+ officers who helped to contain the fire and offered advice on how best to minimise damage.”

Directors on behalf of the company have stated that their Exeter staff will suffer no loss of wages while the store is unable to trade and all at Richer Sounds are committed to getting the shop trading as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.

Richer Sounds added that customers will be rerouted through either its telesales department, or to the Plymouth and Bristol branches for in-store experiences.

Exeter store manager Mark Stidson said: “I want to thank local businesses, the community at large, family and friends, who have rallied round and offered support, and apologise to anyone who was inconvenienced by the unfortunate events of Wednesday afternoon/evening.”
